How To Visit an Archaeology Site
Enjoy the parks, but leave no trace
When you are out experiencing the parks, look closely and you may see artifacts and important sites that have stories to tell. Take your time to enjoy the natural beauty of your surroundings — and imagine how people lived, taking advantage of the natural vegetation, wildlife and terrain to create a viable and sustainable life.
The most important thing to remember when visiting is to leave nothing behind except your footsteps — and take away only photographs!
- If you see an artifact, leave it exactly as you found it
- Take a photo or drawing of the artifact
- If you can, mark the location of the artifact on a map or record using GPS.
- Report your findings to a ranger or state park staff at the ANDSP Visitor Center???CHECK!
Do NOT pick up, move or collect anything — or post GPS coordinates of what you found on Internet or social media. Do NOT dig or change the landscape of the area that you visit in any way, and do not create any trail markers such as piles of rocks or signs. Thank you.
PLEASE NOTE: Moving or removing archaeological materials or defacing places is against state and federal laws and carry severe penalties for violations. The locations of sites are also protected by law. These laws provide protection for our archaeological resources, part of our collective past and cultural heritage.
Signs of those who came before us
Artifacts
Artifacts are objects made or used by humans in the past. In California, archaeological artifacts include both historic and Native American items that are more than 50 years old.
Features
Features are evidence of human activity that is not portable, such as bedrock mortars, rock art and rock circles.
Other Things You May See
Debris from stone-tool making (Flakes of stone), rock shelters, rock circles, old roads, walls, building foundations, and fence lines. Remember: Take away only photos!

Archaeological Record
The Archaeological Record is the documentation of a particular archaeological site composed of artifacts and features that help us learn about the past in the Park and elsewhere. Artifacts lose their potential for teaching us when they are moved or changed in any way. Of course, if they are taken away, the story is lost forever.
